Despite being a total charmer and an attention magnet, Chihuahuas only extend their love and affection to the chosen ones. They may also lay their life for the chosen person if necessary. However, as is commonly experienced in neighborhoods with more dogs, ankle-biter Chihuahuas defend their own with all their heart and not to mention their teeth. Before diving into the Chihuahuas types, let’s learn a little more about the breed!

Breed Characteristic

A typical Chihuahua is a bold and confident dog. They usually weigh anywhere between 3 to 6 pounds. Chihuahuas are known for their alert and suspicious nature, which makes them great watchdogs despite their tiny size. When socialized properly, Chihuahuas can be an excellent choice of pet in homes with children.

Due to the breed’s small size, these dogs are a perfect choice for busy-bee owners as the breed doesn’t require as much exercise. However, Chihuahuas thrive on attention and may get destructive if their demands aren’t met. Now, let’s dive into the many types that Chihuahuas come in!

Due to a large amount of fur, they need regular grooming and brushing to keep them looking shiny. Frequent baths and daily brushing are also essential parts of their maintenance routine. Besides this, Long-haired Chihuahuas shed immensely; however, the coat usually takes three years to grow. Just like their Short-haired cousins Long-haired Chihuahuas also come in different shades allowing you to have your pick at the letter.

5. Pear Head Chihuahua

Looking at the different types of Chihuahua varieties, it’s hard to miss that breeders had a lot of fun naming or even driving the changes in the Chihuahua breed. The mix of an Apple-headed and Deer-headed Chihuahua gives way to another peculiarly shaped fruit; the pear. Pear-headed Chihuahuas have a wide apple-shaped upper portion of their head, which narrows down slightly to give the appearance of a pear. These dogs also have a wider muzzle than their Deer-headed Chihuahua cousins. This brand also tends to weigh heavier on the scale than any of its cousins, often crossing the six-pound limit. Due to the exotic-sounding name, some people often charge a premium fee for the breed; hence it’s best to research and avoid falling for any gimmicks.

They come in various hues and coats, both short and long. In addition, they’re also extremely fragile, requiring incredible caution to be around them.
